How a Support Case Moves From Intake to Order

A support case follows a predictable path. Knowing the stages tells you what to prepare and where cases stall.

Intake and locate

You provide identifying information, existing orders, income, insurance, and childcare details (the state may open a case automatically if benefits like TANF are involved). Agencies then locate the other parent through wage databases, unemployment records, new-hire reports, and credit bureaus — a misspelled name or wrong birthdate can stall this for weeks.

Service and temporary orders

The other parent must receive proper legal notice before any order can issue, usually by a professional server or certified mail. Some courts set temporary support on preliminary income while the case proceeds — start paying immediately to prevent arrears.

Financial exchange, then hearing or settlement

Both sides submit paystubs, tax returns, insurance, childcare receipts, and parenting-time proof. Many cases settle by stipulation using the guideline calculator; otherwise the court applies the guidelines unless a justified deviation exists.

Order and implementation

The signed order sets the amount, arrears, schedule, and insurance/childcare splits. An Income Withholding Order goes to the employer and payments flow through the SDU. Review the order for errors in names, amounts, and case numbers, then keep the agency updated on any change.
