Many courts allow "unbundled," limited-scope representation — a lawyer handles a specific task (review documents, draft a brief, appear at one hearing) while you manage the rest. Get referrals, interview more than one attorney, ask about their experience with guideline calculations and your judge, and request a transparent fee structure.

Does it pay for itself?

If the dispute exceeds roughly $400 a month over several years, representation usually pays off. For smaller stakes, ask counsel whether self-help is the better value. Either way, arrive organized — a one-page summary, the orders, payment histories — and disclose the unfavorable facts up front.
