Avoiding Perjury & Sanctions
A financial affidavit is sworn testimony. Treating it casually is how a support case turns into a sanctions hearing — or worse.
Disclose everything
An intentional misstatement can draw monetary sanctions, strike your pleadings, produce adverse inferences, or get referred for prosecution. Reveal every revenue stream — wages, tips, side work, bonuses, commissions, stocks, crypto, rental income, recurring gifts — and for self-employment, gross receipts plus documented legitimate expenses.
The social-media trap
A public "just bought a new truck!" while pleading inability to pay becomes an exhibit. Opposing counsel screenshots it. Complete discovery promptly, and if a request is overbroad, object with a narrower scope rather than ignore it.
Fix errors fast
If you find a mistake, file an amended affidavit immediately and notify the other party — acknowledging it limits the credibility damage far better than having it discovered later. Read your declaration aloud before signing; hearing the words catches overstatements.
