Child support is a "domestic support obligation" — a priority debt that can't be discharged in bankruptcy (11 U.S.C. § 523(a)(5)) — so unpaid amounts survive the case. Keep enforcing and keep the ledger clean.

Probate

If the paying parent dies, the recipient must file a creditor's claim promptly in probate court, where support obligations hold high priority. Miss the claim window and you can lose the ability to collect from the estate.

Guardianship

When guardianship changes, update payment routing to the child's guardian and notify every relevant insurer so payments and coverage follow the child.
