Getting a Refund When Possible

Overpaid support doesn't automatically come back as a check. What happens to it depends on your ledger.

Arrears come first

Agencies usually apply any overpayment to outstanding arrears and interest before issuing a refund. Pull the SDU history with exact dates and amounts, and request a written ledger adjustment showing how the overage reduced your balance.

When a true refund is possible

A cash refund generally happens only when no arrears exist and the overpayment is verified — and some states restrict refunds of voluntarily paid support, offering a future credit instead. If a court reduced support retroactively, bring the signed modification to the agency for recomputation and make sure the employer gets an updated stop-notice.

Don't self-help the ledger

Never request an employer chargeback or self-deduct without agency direction — both scramble the records and can trigger enforcement. Submit a concise letter (dates, amounts, reason, and whether you want a refund or credit) with your SDU statements, and follow up every few weeks.
