Ending Support at Emancipation: Closing the Case

Closing a case cleanly at emancipation is a sequence of steps — skip one and withholding or charges can keep running.

Verify, then file to terminate

Confirm the specific trigger — age 18, high-school completion, marriage, or military enlistment — with official documentation and its effective date. Then file the termination motion stating the basis and date, ask the court to direct the SDU to apply future payments to arrears only, and make sure the employer gets an updated income withholding order.

Settle arrears and step-downs

Get official arrears statements before and after — emancipation stops new charges but not existing debt — and propose an installment plan based on current income. If younger children remain under the same order, request a modified step-down order with the new amount and effective date rather than calculating it yourself.

Audit after closing

Clarify when health-insurance obligations end and submit final reimbursement receipts. Then, about two months after termination, verify that no new current-support charges appear on the SDU record, keep a closure file, and coordinate the dependency claim (and Form 8332) for the final tax year.
