TANF assignment

While receiving TANF, recipients typically assign their collection rights to the state (42 U.S.C. § 608(a)(3)), which may keep collected support to reimburse the assistance. Some states offer a partial "pass-through" — check with your caseworker for the current amount.

SNAP, Medicaid, and cooperation

Support received may be treated differently for SNAP than earned income, and court-ordered support usually doesn't affect a child's Medicaid or CHIP — but report income changes promptly to avoid overpayment debts. Programs may require cooperation (information, appointments, paternity testing), with good-cause exemptions where cooperation would risk safety; document those concerns through a counselor, advocate, or law enforcement.

Budget for the transition

Don't rely on irregular support for fixed expenses like rent, and plan for the income shift as support becomes reliable and benefits step down.
