Confidentiality & Sealed Records
Support cases put sensitive material into a public record. A few habits keep it from being exposed.
Redact and seal
Replace full identifiers with partial ones — last four digits or initials instead of complete SSNs, account numbers, birthdates, and children's names — and verify the redaction is permanent in the PDF, not just a highlight. When redaction won't do (medical records, IEPs, therapy notes, a confidential address), file under seal and pair it with a public, redacted summary so the docket still makes sense.
Programs and orders
Domestic-violence survivors can enroll in a state address-confidentiality program that substitutes a government mailing address on public records. A protective order can limit sensitive discovery (paystubs, tax returns, medical bills) to case use only, with secure storage and post-case destruction. For safety, request a remote appearance or a separate waiting area.
Don't undo it online
Never post court papers — it can violate a protective order — and if someone else does, screenshot it for a sanctions or contempt motion.
