When a child's needs don't end at 18, support planning has to look decades ahead — and protect the benefits the child relies on.

Support beyond majority

Texas courts can order support for an adult child for an indefinite period when the child has a disability that existed before the 18th birthday and requires substantial care and supervision (Tex. Fam. Code § 154.302). Back any request with real evidence: physician statements on diagnosis and functional limits, IEP or 504 plans, therapy records, and equipment prescriptions. "Weekly speech therapy at $120" persuades where a general assertion won't.

Map the real costs

Build a budget covering insurance, co-pays, therapies, equipment, respite care, and accessibility modifications — and separate what Medicaid waivers, SSI/SSDI, and school services cover from the gaps a parent must fund.

Protect the benefits

Direct cash to an adult child can disqualify means-tested assistance. Route support through a third-party special-needs trust or an ABLE account, or use vendor payments, so the help doesn't become countable income. Build milestone review hearings into the order at key transitions so you never have to restart from scratch.
